I finally got up close with a present day drone on the weekend – a DJI Mavic Pro – and boy, was I impressed. In fact, I’m that impressed, I’m going to get one for myself to ‘play with’ over the next 6 months to see how I can fit drones into my existing property photography workflow process.
The camera / lens quality on the Mavic Pro produces 4K video and 12.4MP still images – not something you’d necessarily write home to your Mom about, they’re about the same as an iPhone 7, which I have and know is only good for what I call “location scouting” imagery – however, the quality is good enough for excellent web viewed movie clips and it’s he same for stills. I have long been considering the move to drones but issues such as equipment costs, capability, public safety and legal liability issues have all conspired to hold me back. But the technology has improved tenfold over the last couple of years on the drone front to the point they are basically being designed now not to crash first and foremost. It’s incredible! So there are now good reasons for me to consider even using some of those for commercial use. And, of course, it should be fun to learn how to use it and work out how drones work.
The big issue for any drone noob, such as myself, to the world of UAV is the very complicated rules and regulations currently in place. You can’t just throw something up into the sky and go for it. New Zealand has some of the most fastidious red tape in play when it comes to drones used for commercial work. Just a cursory initial run through some of what operators need to know looks incredibly daunting at this stage. I will write further posts when in due course to keep you up to date with my own personal process. Anyway, to check on the Mavic Pro review-wise, have a look at this video or follow the link below to a write up on the little magical beast.
